Contingency table A type of data display in which two categorical variables are compared. As such, a contingency table is a way of displaying descriptive data for frequency counts. The categories of each variable are displayed in the rows and columns, respectively, thereby forming cells for each combination of categories. The raw frequency of occurrence of the data within each category combination is then displayed in its corresponding cell. In addition, language production can be oral or written. With both types of data, there are several ways in which the data can be analyzed. For example, researchers may wish to look at how accurately learners use the past tense when describing their weekend activities. Alternatively, researchers may wish to examine how conversational partners structure their turn-taking during a classroom discussion. Language production can also be analyzed for the semantic content that it contains.
